In the small Jordanian hilltop town of Madaba, on the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George, there is a sixth century mosaic map of the Holy Land. Just fifty kilometres from modern Jerusalem, one can make out in the mosaic, features of the ancient city still recognisable today. After the six day war of 1967 Israel annexed East Jerusalem and its immediate environs, removing the barbed wire barricades and UN sentry posts. The dividing line between the Jewish and Arab cities still remains - it is known as the green line, an invisible line, as clear as day.
